Get Involved with Second Chance Animal Shelter Norman OK: "Get Involved!
Volunteer
Second Chance could not do what it does without the help of our volunteers! Although our staff is dedicated and knowledgeable, extra helping hands and hearts are necessary to accomplish the important work in which we are involved. Every activity you perform, whether directly handling the animals or not, improves the quality of their lives and decreases the length of their stay in our program.
We need volunteers at the shelter: walking the dogs, socializing the cats, cleaning, sweeping and mopping, doing laundry, making adoption packets, doing light office work, helping with customer service. We need volunteers at events: at adoption clinics @ Petsmart and Petco, and at major adoption and community outreach events. Our volunteers are 18 and older, however volunteers who are 16 & 17 years of age are welcome as long as their parents remain with them while they are volunteering.
We are presently restructuring our volunteer program at Second Chance so that we can give our animals the absolute best care possible and we would like for you to be a part of that. Beginning August 1, only those who have attended one of our Volunteer Orientations will be allowed to continue to volunteer at Second Chance.
To get started, just fill out a Volunteer Application and liability waiver for you or your child. Bring the application and waiver with you and stop by sometime during our operating hours. You will be notified when the next Volunteer Orientation will be held.
Doggie Day Out
This is a great benefit for our dogs to get out of the shelter and be socialized to different circumstances, locations, and people. Some of the dogs are able to visit the dog park or a people park, some dogs like to go to Petsmart or Petco, and some just like to ride around town in the car or hang out in front of the TV.
A person over the age of 18 can come to the shelter with a photo ID and fill out a form. Dogs are available Tuesday - Friday from 11am-2pm. (There is a three hour time limit for taking a dog out.) We will try to match a dog with you and the places you would like to go. When the dog is returned to the shelter, there is a survey to fill out. This survey helps us learn more about the dog's personality which then allows us to better match the dogs with potential adopters.
